Blatent Rehash or Latest Innovation?
Sony releases the Playstation Move today. It's their entry into the motion gaming movement that got started with the Nintendo Wii. It's pretty similar in premise, though Sony would tell you that it's more precise with the use of their camera, the Playstation Eye.
The controller itself looks a little goofy, but the colored ball on the end of it will actually change color based on the color of the background behind you. That makes it easier for the camera to pull it out from the rest of your surroundings.
The price point can get a little steep here depending on how many controllers you're looking for. Each Move controller is $49.99 with the Navigation controller (essentially the Nunchuck we're all familiar with from the Wii) is priced at an additional $29.99. Add on the price of the camera, games and extra controllers for more players, and you're looking at a potentially prohibitive price point. They've got some bundles as well (pictured above) that help get you started, but they all seem to be missing the Navigation controller. Penny-pinching players have the option of just using the left-half of their normal Dual-Shock 3 controller, but that can get a bit uncomfortable.
It'll be interesting to see how well this controller option fares when up against the already ludicrous install base of the Nintendo Wii and the upcoming Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect. Either way though, I think hardcore gamers can finally be pleased with a "Wii-HD" option in the Playstation Move.
Here's today's Web Waster:
Playstation - I'm still not sure whether or not I'll jump in on the Playstation Move, but you can check out their site and decide for yourself. If you can get past the initial price barrier, it's some pretty neat technology that can help bring the whole family together around the Playstation during our upcoming cold months.
